Gabriella Delgado, Historian 2022-2023
Initial Letter
The beginning of the end. The first day of Senior year was surreal to say the least. Waking up at 4:30 to see the sunrise that marks the beginning of our last first day, was tiring yet thrilling at the same time. The fact that my years at high school have been impacted so much by covid is unfortunate and has made the years fly by. Walking to my first class, two things were going through my mind. We are the oldest students on campus and that my schedule is not the best. Of course, every year is different, and with the different classes that everyone takes, leadership is an elective and gets put last. So instead of getting out of school early, I come to school late. The first few days have been great, and our class has really bonded over how crazy our high school years have been.
You don’t realize that your transitioning into adult hood until it happens. When you are consistenty holding a job, paying stuff off, complaining about gas prices, and start spending less time with the people that don’t matter. When we are looking up colleges, researching majors for our future, and having to look if we can even afford the future we desire. It is scary growing up, it really is. But at the same time, it is thrilling jumping head first into something you never have before. Over the summer, I had the opportunity to look at some campus’s in Southern California. It really kind of pushed me to work hard this year, and to not let senioritis impede on my progress. This future is a crazy thing to think about when you feel as if you have grown up so fast.
Ultimately, out of the program I want to take in as much as I can. These past years have been amazingly effective at teaching me not only skills for my professional life but for life in the real world as well. I want to create stronger bonds with my friends and also reach out to those I do not really know and make an impact on them as well. It will be bittersweet to leave this class as an almost legacy but it is not over yet.

Quotes
“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic: it takes sweat, determination and hard work.”-Colin Powell
I love this quote because in order to get what you want you have to work for it. A dream will always be a dream if you never take action on it. You cannot just sit on your butt and expect it to be dropped in your hands, it takes work. It also makes your dream a lot more satisfying because you know that you put in that hard working to get there. I see this a lot in people that are trying to lose weight. They expect to see result when they are sitting on their couch eating all the snack in their pantry and not taking the steps to get up and work out.
“To infinity and beyond”- Buzz Lightyear
This quote to me means that the possibilities are endless and infinite. There is so much out there in the world that we think are out of our possibilities, when in reality the possibilities we have are endless. Go beyond your expectations of yourself, and push to reach as high as you ever had. I also really love the toy story movies so I love this quote.
“Aspire to Inspire before we expire”- Unknown
This quote to me means that in the time we have, we need to radiate positivity and connect with each other instead of building walls. We need to be able to leave wherever we are, knowing that we radiated positively to our community and to our peers. Always be impactful on everyone around you and strive to inspire because life is really short and you never know when you can be taken out of it. To ensure you don’t expire with a sad life, motivate everyday and make an impact on as many people as possible. I try to do this in my everyday life.
Quotes- Part 2
“Just like the lotus we too have the ability to rise from the mud, bloom out of the darkness, and radiate into the world”-Ann Silvers
|
In the description of these assignments it asks us to reach into the symbolism of my years in leadership. I would say that the lotus definitely represents my years well. Given to us freshman year after we got shut down, that lotus pin clings to my letterman along with my other decorations. But because of that lotus I got to get all of those patches and stars. To rise from the mud trying to drag you down and bloom from darkness dimming your light is something that takes a lot of strength and resilience. In leadership there will be times when you feel stuck, and cant get out, or you are trying to bloom upwards but feel restricted. That's normal, you just have to persevere, believe in yourself, and trust that you know yourself to get things done.

Goals
Leader 1- Get to Know Everyone Pretty Well in the Class.
Being a senior this year, I want to share my knowledge with the classes that will still be here when I leave. I want them to refer back to my advice when they are unsure about something in class, or to just remember something I have said when they are stressed.
Leadership 2- Prepare my trainee and successfully due my job
This is my first year with a trainee and we’re doing the scrapbook last year by myself I feel as if I have a lot of knowledge and advice to hand down to my trainee Gaby. It will be a challenge given that I usually am in my own world when I create stuff but now that I have to teach, I just have to properly prepare her to make her own BEST SCRAPEBOOK EVER alongside me and possibly her own in the future.
Long term 1- Graduate from College with a degree that sets me up for the Real World
The real world is a scary place and I want to be prepared for it. I really want to go into a job that actually makes an impact on this world and I have gone through many different majors that will help me achieve that. Graduating from a college that has me up for the real world is so important because I want to be able to go off of my own and be confident in that.
Long term 2- Travel the World
Traveling the world has always fascinated me. To think that there is a world of cultures and ideas that are beyond where we live is a a world that I want to discover. You have such a tight bubble around you when you live in such a privilege town in one of the wealthiest states in America and within that, America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. so just exploring places that maybe you don’t have as much privilege as us will brighten our perspective on life, and I think a lot of people need that.
Short- Be successful in my sports.
Especially coming off a rough year, I want to make my last year one of the best. I feel as if last year I was lacking in the leadership that my team needed and this year is finally my opportunity to step up. In track I got up to masters and it was a great experience but I knew that if I would’ve changed a little harder now because I’ve gone to state. In basketball I never played a league game because of my knee injury, and also it isn’t all the way healed, I still want to play as much as I can and be a powerhouse.
Short- Get into a good college.
Right now colleges and applications are very stressful. So when I get into a hopefully good college, I will know that all of my hard work throughout the past four years has really paid off for me. I also feel that going to a good college will set you up for a good future because they have the teachers and resources that you need. I will be the first person in my family to go to university (hopefully).

Goals- Part 2
Leader 1- Get to Know Everyone Pretty Well in the Class.
I think I have definitely made a lot of connections with people I wouldn't have expected, especially with the Juniors. I don’t know why but this year our classes have really clicked. I also really love the sophomores a lot. Maybe it's something about being a senior and wanting to connect with as many people because this is the last time I will see them, in high school. The freshmen are still pretty quiet but have made a connection with a few of them by either sitting with them in class. This is such a solid group of people, and I am so excited for the years to come for this class.
Leadership 2- Prepare my trainee and successfully due my job
Wow. I definitely forgot that I wrote this, but I am happy to announce that the scrapbook is done andI truly think that Gaby is prepared for next year. Not only has she been asking me questions, but when I asked her to take on all of winterfest, not only did she do it, she absolutely killed it. I logged on to the scrapbook and was genuinely impressed. She even filled out the Purchase order to get it in before the banquet. I am so proud of her and her hard work and can’t wait to see how the scrapbook comes out next year.
Long term 1- Graduate from College with a degree that sets me up for the Real World
I have one foot in the door towards this goal. Given that this is a long term goal, I didn’t expect for it to happen but I did hope to make small advances towards this goal. This small advance has been me actually getting into multiple colleges and figuring out what I want to major in.
Long term 2- Travel the World
I still drive towards this goal, but I do not think this is going to happen anytime soon. With college, lack of work, and trying to focus on school first, traveling is going to be on the back burner for a while. I do still hope to travel the world before I settle down and hope to visit Peru, Iceland, Paris, Bora Bora, and many more.
Short- Be successful in my sports.
I would say I have definitely met one of my goals for this year. Success in sports to me is doing better than I did last time, and always going 100% because you get out what you put in. I have been practicing nearly 6 days a week, trying to beat my last mark. It has paid off and I now hold both school records in my events. One of them hasn’t been broken since 1982. I still strive to go to masters and maybe even state.
Short- Get into a good college.
I can say that I did in fact achieve this goal. I got into a total of 4 colleges and waitlisted at one. Were they my dream college? No, but they were all still really good colleges. I got into Sac state, Chico state, Texas state, University of California– Irvine, and was waitlisted at SDSU. So yes, I do think that I completed this goal.

People Magazine
Article: Who is Gabby Delgado?Gabby Delgado is a Senior at Ripon High. She is a true Riponite, being raised in this town since she was 2, there is no other town she knows better. Gabby has always been involved in many things on and off the Ripon High campus. Some things consist of playing multiple school sports like Basketball and Track, clubs such as Book Club, Girls League, CSF, Ap courses, stats and photography for football, being in leadership, yearbook, and a job at the very delicious coffee chain, Dutch Bros. Although balancing all of this may be hard, it is all worth it. In a recent interview she states, “The future is a scary thing, but a big step is coming in a couple of months, college.” She hopes to have a career in homeland Security, specifically focusing on counter terrorism. "There are just so many different career paths I can take, and it is very stressful. I just hope that what i choose is the right pick for me." As it gets closer to the end of her high school career, she hopes that she makes a long lasting impact on this campus and the people on it. "I have spent the last four years on this campus and there is no other high school I would rather be at. I hope I leave behind a positive legacy that people wish to follow.”

Role Model: Joseph Delgado
When asking who my Role Model is every year, it never changes even though I am technically supposed to change it because I am a veteran. There is no one else in my life can possible be my role model more than my dad, which is why I choose him every year. He is the biggest pain in my side, bit he truly does so much and inspires me every day to push harder in school and sports. He works so hard in his job not only to help his community but also to inspire his coworkers to make change in the work space, because he will soon retire and he wants his impact to last. He is very tough, like very strict, but it also means he just cares. I consistently have to remind myself of this because it can get frustrating, but of course, its out of love. I wish I thanked my dad more for how thankful I am for him, because he truly is the best.

Inner Animal: Brown BearDeciding what my inner animal was this year was actually easier than past years. An animal immediately came to my mind, and when I asked my friends they said the same animal which was weird. I need an animal that thrived as an independent but also in a pack when needed. Something strong and persistent, that can get things done when needed to be done, but also take time for themselves. The perfect animal, a grizzly bear. They are strong and can survive on their own, not in packs, but when surrounded by family (or friends in human case) then they take care of their own. They are protective and powerful and do not like to be messed with, same. I think it fits perfectly and it is a great fit for this years inner animal.

The Best Things About Me
The Impact of Sounds and Words- Sure Thing by Miguel
Love you like a brother
Treat you like a friend
Respect you like a lover.
oooh, ohh, oooh ohh. oooh ohh.
(You can bet that, never go to sweat that). x4
If you be the cash, I'll be the rubber band
You be the match, I' goin be a fuse. BOOM
Painter baby you can be the muse.
i'm the reporter baby you can be the news.
Cause you're the cigarette, and i'm the smoker
We raise a bet, cause you're the joker
Truth though
You are the chalk
And I could be the blackboard
And you can be the talk
I could be the walk
Even when the sky comes falling
Even when the sun don't shine
I got faith in you and I
So put your pretty little hand in mine
Even when we're down to the wire baby
Even when it's do or die
We can do it baby simple and plain
Cause this love is a sure thing
(You could bet that, never got to sweat that). x4
You could be the lover
I'll be the fighter babe
If I'm the blunt
Then you're lighter babe
Fire it up!
Writer baby
You could be the quote
If I'm the lyric baby
You could be the note
Record that!
Saint, I'm a sinner
Prize, I'm a winner
And it's you
What did I do to deserve that
Paper baby
I'll be the pen
Say that I'm the one
Cause you are a ten
Real and not pretend!
Even when the sky comes falling
Even when the sun don't shine
I got faith in you and I
So put your pretty little hand in mine
Even when we're down to the wire baby
Even when it's do or die
We can do it babe simple and plain
Cause this love is a sure thing
(Rock with me baby, let me hold you in my arms, talk with me baby) x2
This love
Between you and I
As simple as pie baby
Such a sure thing
Oh is it a sure thing
(music)
Even when the sky comes falling
Even when the sun don't shine
I got faith in you and I
So put your pretty little hand in mine
Even when we're down to the wire baby
Even when it's do or die
We can do it baby simple and plain

Sure thing by Miguel is the song I have chosen. I feel like with each listener, it can be interpreted in different ways. Most people might relate it to relationship and complimenting each other, especially in the lyrics when it starts saying, “If i’m the lyric baby, You could be the note,” or, “Cause your the cigarette and im the smoker”. In my life I relate this to having peoples backs, loyalty, and finding your people. Once you establish those who you trust, the bond can be so tight that you just flow together. Especially when it says, “Love you like a brother.Treat you like a friend.Respect you like a lover.” That’s is my favorite line because in any relationship including friendships, that is the base.

Homecoming 2022
What I Like Best About Being a Member of Leadership
- Core Camp - Lil Wang
2. Night Rally Dance
Another favorite that I enjoy being apart of as a member of leadership is helping out with the Night Rally Lipsync battle and dance. Sitting down with April and Gracie and figuring out the lines while getting fed food by her mom was so fun and enjoyable. I always have a great time being apart of the dance and this year taking home the DUB. This year especially, I felt so much closer to my class and getting together every night dancing was a highlight for sure.
3. Homecoming
Homecoming was the real reason that I fell in love with leadership, and this year was no exception. Every year I provide the trailer and I love doing it. I unfortunately didn’t have it at my house because my dad bought a real trailer. Just this year entirely it felt so great and was the perfect way to end high school. Personally my favorite part was when these 3 kids walked up to my dads car and asked him if they could ride in the back, and my dad was asking if they were a part of the senior float. This drew my attention and I walked over there and basically said “Um absolutely not”. My dad thought they were scared of me, but I told him sometimes you just have to put kids in their place when all they are looking for is trouble. We took the homecoming win and we were all so happy.
A Reflection of a Peer in LeadershipMy peer reflection has to go to Gracie Winchell. Me and Gracie have known each other for a very long time (Since early Ripon El days) , but sometimes I feel like we forget. The story of something good stems from a time during class where it was a work day, and we both were basically done with everything. She was sitting near the computer chairs talking about something so I somehow made my way over. We ended up talking but not about our work, or leadership, or how much stress we were under, but about normal high school stuff like boys/girls, college, etc. It honestly was a breath of fresh air, which was surprising because we almost never talk, because of the two different worlds we live in. But every time we do end up talking, it’s a reminder of just how long we have known each other and how alike we really are. She is a little feisty but it balances out with her ability to just listen and make sure you are being heard. I appreciate Gracie for that moment and I know if she or I ever need a break from the real world to be giddy teenagers, I know I can go to her.

Pride
What I love to do...
Oh the things I love to do
What do they include?
The swish and flick of a brush of paint
Or the rough sports that aren't for the faint
The options that I can choose
All of them are my muse
Night drives with friend under the moonlight
To being a barista late at night
All the things I love to do
Well I guess there is more than a few
Dear Parents,
First off, I truly love you guys so much and I wouldn’t be who I am without you. Thank you for everything you do for me. I appreciate you guys always standing by my side with every decision I make. You guys do everything for me. Although it may be tough love at times, From when I was little you made sure I had my priorities straight. Education would be a huge part of my life. It is very important to be a great student and to get good grades. I thought that it was whatever when I was younger, but now that I am in High School, I understand the importance of it. It is a big part of my focus. I also want to thank you for giving me whatever I needed. Whenever I needed money for a college applications, prom dresses, sports uniforms, etc they would provide it. I am so grateful for how you always go out of your way to do stuff for me. Even though we have our ups and downs like regular parent-kid relationships, I wouldn’t change or switch it for the world. I couldn’t have asked for two better people raise me and to teach me lessons through life.

Your True Legacy
Dear Future Historian,
I am so proud that you have been accepted into the most fun, engaging, and creative jobs in the leadership class. While this position is very fun, you will be busy, stressed, entertained, and challenged, but the book result is worth it. Doing this for two years has allowed me to pick up on some tips and tricks to pass down. Like definitely do not procrastinate. I definitely emphasize starting early and being consistently on top of the events that are occurring at that time. When you take pictures off of your camera roll, it is best to make a separate album wear you can instantly transfer them to, to later upload to the Shutterfly Website. Also get the Shutterfly app! Makes uploading so easy. I also recommend getting more storage or deleting them as soon as you are sure they are uploaded. Shutterfly itself is also a pain at times. The embellishments really lack on the website and it is hard to find an embellishment for exactly what you want. Icons are very limited on the website so you have to come up with different designs to fill the space or maybe even pull them from the web or Canva. Ask your classmates for help if you are unable to attend the events that you need pictures of. Although a phone camera did amazing, an actual camera is a huge difference in quality. I would also be more strict with peoples scrapbook days. It is just so much easier when people don’t switch days and you have to worry about giving them the password. Emphasis on giving them the password on their day as well, so they don’t go on the website whenever they want thinking they can get an early start. Within all of this stuff, you will have tons of fun. It is a really flexible job that allows you to help the busier position of the class also. At the end of the year, It is really rewarding to flip through the book and see your creation. Be creative, be you, be diligent, and have fun!

The Professional
Public Speaking- In this unit, every student in our leadership class gets a random topic to make and deliver a speech about. This prepares us for the unexpected and allows us to be put on the spot, instead of delivering something we are prepared for. This is very important because in the future, especially in the professional world, there will be times where you have to speak in front of someone and give a presentation. In our job position it doesn't happen as often as maybe a class president but it is still present in our position.
ASB Meetings (professional dress)- ASB Meetings are probably one of the most important professional development things we do. Being able to show up to a professional meeting, dressed appropriately and speak about your accomplishments and how you have been building the team up by doing your part is 100% going to happen. Every single job is going to have meetings and knowing how to present yourself is a skill everyone should have. It keeps you accountable in your position and sees the progress of others.

Change
For me as a leader, this year has truly come full circle. Getting to experience Core Camp at UCSC, scrubbing the floor of the MUB after BTSD, pulling our homecoming float, getting to put together another scrapbook, some of these things I haven’t gotten to do since Freshman year. I reflect back on when I first began this program and have truly seen my personal and professional growth and development. This year I feel as if I have not only strengthened my already existing bonds but harbored new ones. Being told this year, in praises, etc, that I have impacted someone's time here in the leadership class or they look up to me in some way has warmed my heart. I remember looking up to those older than me in the leadership class and now that I am that person to someone else emphasizes the “full circle” feeling.
But that good feeling hasn’t always been constant. There have been moments where the tension has been high. Where connections are broken and gossip begins. For most of us, it doesn't happen directly, but we are all connected to each other through each other. So when some drama occurs, WHOOSH, it spreads like wildfire and people start taking sides. For the future class, if this happens just remember that everyone is human, people make mistakes, and communicating like adults is the biggest problem solver that people refuse to accept because it's hard. All relationships have their problems and their fights, it's just how you choose to handle them.

The Ideal Leader
When you are in a depth of struggle who do you want to go to? When you are in need of guidance who do you see as an example? When you think of the person that embodies work ethic and perseverance who comes to mind? These are all the questions that guide us to what we see a leader as. A leader is someone that sets the tone for people that are maybe unsure or inconfident. They have an immense amount of courage and compassion, and can stay calm and have their wits about them in tense situations. This to me is an ideal leader.
A student in leadership is expected to be to class on time, sit accordingly, and get started on either their daily journal or checking their emails. While planning events it is also deem necessary to be focused and engaged and leave all distraction elsewhere to proficiently get stuff done. Deadlines are crucial in this program so time management and deadlines with assignments are also as important. It is still acceptable behavior to have fun in this program and to socialize, there is just better time than others, like when you have all your work done, to do so.
