Gabriella Delgado, Freshman Representative 2019-2020
Initial Letter
As a Freshman, I thought high school was a chaotic, fast paced, crazy version of elementary school. Turns out, from the few weeks of being in this environment, it wasn’t at all. It is a fun place with a a good amount of tiredness, and stress. My first high school experience was summer basketball. I made new friends with my teammates and had a blast. It kept me busy for the month of June, and I plan to play it all four years.
My second high school experience was Core Camp. Along with my fellow leadership classmates, we traveled to Santa Cruz to learn how to be a leader on our campuses. It was a great time to make new friends, and hear the stories of what-to-do and what-not-to-do as a freshman. It was an overall fantastic experience that taught many valuable lessons. On the first day of school, I kind of got lost, but got the hang of it throughout the week.
In eighth grade I decided I was gonna challenge myself to take all AP, and Honors classes provided. So I did, even though I knew that is going to be a lot to take on. My classes so far are amazing, the teachers are great, and I’m making friends in the classes I have. I’m excited to learn the new material, and not just four subjects like elementary. Leadership is going to be so fun, and exciting, even though I know it is a difficult class. I am excited to meet new people in my classes, at the rallies, and at sports events.
Personally, I have a lot of hopes and expectations for this school year. I hope it is fun, exciting, and awesome! I hope that I have a great time, and make a bunch of new friends a long the way. I want to always go forward and never backwards this year. I expect it to be hard, I do. I understand that you have to mature significantly and become responsible quickly in order to thrive, especially in difficult classes. I expect my leadership class to be a great experience, and a great way to be involved in the school. At amazing rallies, dances, and events, I want to step back and say wow, I was apart of this. Last but not least, I hope I remember my first year of high, along with the rest of the years, in a positive way. I want my freshman year to be the foundation for the rest of my time at high school.

Favorite Quotes
"Rise above the storm and you will find the sunshine."- Mario Fernandez
This is one of my favorite quotes. I came upon this quote while searching for important quotes about a year ago, It has always stuck. This quote explains how even in tough times it will get better. Even if something is difficult it will be worth it and be ten times better when its over.
"Follow your heart but take your brain with you"- Alfred Adler
This quote is so important. So many people follow their heart and want to forget their opinions and second thoughts which is their brain. It is better to bring both your heart and your brain because both matter.
Scripture James 1:6
This scripture states, "But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind." This scripture is important to me because it was given to me by my grandpa. I believe this quote means to always be confident in what you are doing because if you aren't, your doubts will just overrule. I will always love this quote.

“Leadership is not about a title or designation. It’s about impact, influence, and inspiration”
One quote that inspires me and has defined me as a leader is “Leadership is not about a title or designation. It’s about impact, influence, and inspiration”, by Robin S. Sharma. This quote is very true and is something all leaders should stand by. This quote means that even though you are called a leader or in our case in a leadership program, have you taken the steps to act like one? You are not a true leader if you are not willing to do the work and make an impact. Self-reflection is important in a leadership program because you have to be accountable for your actions. If you mess up you have to be willing to own up to your mistakes. This statement is a huge part of being a leader. Are duty in leadership is what this quote explains, to impact, influence, and inspire the student body. Others claim the title and will stop there. Key words this year have been communication, deadlines, accountability, determination, and work ethic. I have had to implement these skills into every event in leadership. I know that even though I use these in the class I also need them outside of it too.
Goals
Leadership Goals
One of my leadership goals is to be in leadership for all four years of High School. From the couple weeks I have been in the program it is by far the most interesting class I have. I do not get bored and I am always busy and doing something. I truly think I can move into one of the more important positions when I am older. Even though this is a difficult class I hope I can take it all four years to keep my on my toes.
A short term goal just for this years leadership class is after every single major event, ask the student how they liked it. I have been doing a pretty good job at keeping this up and plan to do this the whole year to get feedback from the students. I hope I can carry on this goal to other years.
Short-term Goals
One of my short term goals is to finish this school year with a 3.8 and higher. I want to try my best in all of these classes I take and if I flunk a test I retake it. Just because I have seven classes doesn't mean its an excuse to get bad grades.
Another short term goal I have is to meet new people. I have had the same friend group for a very long time, and I love them but I see all of my friends making some new ones and I need to start doing that too. It's good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes.
Long-Term Goals
Definitely a long term goal is a four or more year college. Education is the key to success and a good rated, four year college, where I will love to be, and go crazy with spirit is my kind of school. Also studying what I want to be when I am older, that's important.
Get a forever job! I do not want to be stuck at a desk, or doing immense paperwork. I want to be doing a job that I will love and will never get tired of, a job that I am happy to do when I get up in the morning. I get to make my own money doing something I love.

I have not taken strides to complete the goal of doing leadership for four years. Instead of doing leadership next year, I am taking a different path and trying out yearbook. I chose yearbook over leadership for my sophomore year because I wanted to try it. I love being creative and I think yearbook would be a really good fit for me. I still really loved the experience that leadership has given me. I don't know where the future will take me but I know I will have a great experience.

I have not been where I want with this goal. I have mostly been trying to accomplish this through our social media account, but we somehow got locked out of it. Luckily for us we were done with all of our major events that we needed to before this happened. I was gonna pick it up again on my main account but the last event the freshman reps were in charge of was the Staff and Student Basketball game, which was unfortunately cancelled.

I have tried to takes steps towards this goal. I think I ended last quarter with a 3.8... something. I have especially been hard trying to get my grades up this quarter. I didn't have the grades I would have liked before we ended school due to Corona Virus. I know that its is probably going to be a little more difficult with online school and so many assignments rolling in from all different teachers.
"Another short term goal I have is to meet new people. I have had the same friend group for a very long time, and I love them but I see all of my friends making some new ones and I need to start doing that too. It's good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes."
I think I have taken a very good stride into this goal. My basketball season has definitely helped a lot with this. I have seen these girls around other school campuses and even played against them when they were on other teams. I never talked to them once, but when they season started we were all so close together. I'm so glad I still talk to them because they have become some of my best friends.

I have been taking baby steps towards this goal. I basically have my freshman year of highschool done with. It went by so fast I want it to slow down. If I blink I'm afraid i'll be graduating. This goal is definitely still my main long term goal and will be until it gets accomplished.

Just like the college goal I am making baby steps to reach this goal. I cannot wait to have a job. I get to make make own money and not have to ask my parents for money all the time. It would probably help them out too. I want to work in a local business job rather than a huge chain store.

Article: Gabby Delgado
Gabriella Delgado was born April 16, 2005 in Modesto, California. Her family consist of her Dad(Joe), Mom (Leslie), brother (Caleb), and her two dogs(Sam and Lyla). She lives with her dad in Ripon but visits her mom every other weekend. Gabby doesn’t have a middle name because when she is older, her last name will be her middle name so she will always be a Delgado.
When Gabby was younger she was the sassiest little girl in the world. She wore a ton of pink and loved Dora the Explorer. She even kinda looked like her. Ever since she was little she has been very creative. She always wanted to do stuff. One time, Gabby could not reach her clothes hanging from the hanger in her closet. A light bulb went off in her little head. She grabbed unused shoelaces and strung it from one side of her closet to the other. She stood on a box pulled some clothes down and hung them on the string so she could reach them (see picture). That creative and adaptive mindset still sticks with her today. In school a lot was expected from her. She was always afraid of getting bad grades because she didn't want to disappoint her parents. Her parents always told her that they give her and her brother what they want and the least they could do what do good in school. So she did. In school she was almost like a yard duty to the other kids. Whenever one of her fellow students had a problem or little kid drama they would always go up to Gabby. She didn’t really know why everyone told her their problems but she didn’t really mind it, she liked solving their problems. For example in first grade, a little girl would come up to her and say another person was being mean to her. Little first grade Gabby would gather both people and tell them to say sorry to each other ,and provide a game they could both play. She was a little first grade problem solver. These early life traits heavily carried on throughout the years in a positive way.
Currently Gabby is a Freshman at Ripon High School. In the beginning of the year she didn't like it at all. She felt overwhelmed and didn’t allow herself any time to hang out with her friends and go out to lunch with them. In a way she felt alone and really busy. The classes she took were challenging and with the mindset of not disappointing her parent I was making it way harder for myself then I needed too. The more she got settled in the more comfortable she loosened up. Currently High School she thinks high school is really fun. Gabby goes to lunch and hangs out with her friends. Her favorite periods are Leadership and P.E. She is making a lot of friends and is starting to put less pressure on herself.
In the future she wants to go to a four+ year college. She doesn’t quite know for sure what she wants to do quite yet as a job, but she thinks that she shouldn’t really be thinking about it too much. She has a few more years to enjoy until she has to worry about college applications But within that process, she doesn’t want to regret anything she did in High School. She wants it to be a fun experience. Gabby can’t wait for what the future holds.

Inner AnimalIf an animal were to be exactly like my personality it would be a dolphin. First of all, Dolphins are such amazing creatures. One aspect of them that definitely matches my personality is their playfulness. I have a very joking playful personality, so I believe that is the main matching trait. They are such happy creatures that are not harmful, but kind. Another reason why this animal describes my personality is because of their ability to quickly catch on to things. Dolphins can learn many tricks and follow motions of a hand very easily. I feel as if I can catch on to concept such as plays for sports or even musical instruments very fast like a dolphin. They can create such strong bonds with other dolphins and sea life, similar to how strong my bonds are with my friends and family. In the end, Dolphins are one of my favorite animals. They just happen to match my personality quite closely.

A Song Representing Me
Katy Perry- Firework
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in
Do you ever feel already buried deep
Six feet under scream
But no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you
You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July
'Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down down down
You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you can open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it's time, you'll know
You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July
'Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down down down
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through
'Cause baby you're a firework
Come on show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down down down
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

I picked this song to represent me because behind the amazing, catchy beat to this song are the relatable lyrics. It describes how we all have bad days, and we feel as if no one can relate to us. How we are “drifting through the wind” trying to fit in. I feel like I am out of place so much and can definitely feel like a plastic bag. The chorus talks about bursting and showing your true colors. Once your true colors are shown and you aren’t trying to be like everyone else you will find your place with the right people. I don't try to be like everyone else because I know my people like the person I am.
Homecoming 2019
The Three Most Iconic Memories
It has been approximately 9 months since I learned that I was apart of the RHS leadership for the 2019-2020 school year. Within this time period there have been so many smiles, groans, happy tears, sad tears, nervous nail bitings, and spirit shouting. I have creates so many memories with everyone in this program and it truly is a hardworking family. One memorie that kicked it all off had to start with Core Camp. It was the last night there and word had spread that the Ripon Girls were gonna do a sleepover with each other so the other schools did it too. We had to do room checks first, then we were all gonna book it to one room. The room was Molly’s and Natalie's. The younger counselors did not care if we had a sleepover, as long as we kept quiet and out of trouble. Our biggest obstacle was Lisa, the adult counselor. It was actually pretty funny cause everyone in that building was basically a spy. All the school group chats were connected because we were all roomed with people from other school and we were all hearing the same thing, if Lisa was out of the shower, where she was, is she was coming down the hall, etc. Finally we snuck into the room. We crammed like 12 girls into one room, even one of the counselors came and joined us. It was such a fun night (And we didn’t get in trouble). My second favorite memory is when we were getting our float prepared for the homecoming parade. A lot of freshman showed up and it was fun creating and painting different things to go on our float. I had to step up sometimes of course because people were messing around spray painting random things, but other than that it was a great time. Since this was in the transition from summer into fall, the days were cool. When we would get everything accomplished that we needed to get for the day we would hangout, drink soda, and rock out to music. The third favorite memory for leadership has been setting up for rallies. Attempting to string the streamers from the basketball hoop is always a good challenge for us, along with what we are actually do for decorations to top the other grades. It's also pretty funny when you forget which switch belongs to your basketball hoop so you start flipping different switched and it start raising random ones when they are trying to decorate it. It really is a fun time being a part of leadership. The school year isn’t over yet so I can’ t wait for the many more memories to come.
Reflection of a Peer
One leadership member that I have witnessed not only be kind and helpful, but to many is David Wang. David has such a huge smile all the time! Any time you pass him in the halls he will always say hi or what's up to you. During Leadership David will always be listening to what you're saying, he will even throw in a nod to make sure you are understanding that he is attentive. He always is making sure that he helps out if certain paperwork isn't filled out or if our individual projects or work is all good. On work days he most likely doesn't have anything to do because he already finishes his work prior. So instead of just hanging around doing nothing he bounces from one computer to the next checking on everyone and seeing how their day is going. You can hear his cheery laugh from a mile away. When we had to move the cheers inside form selling match-o-matics, I had my hands full and he offered to put it inside even though I said It was ok. That was very nice of him because he wasn’t even working that day! Also, David is super duper smart. If you are struggling in any class all you have to do is ask David, he will be more than willing to help. He can even help older students, because he got moved to math two as a freshman! He also got a calculus book from Mr. Vigil! David is such a helpful and amazing person!

This Tribe has Pride !
Hobbies
I have multiple hobbies, two in particular, that I do in my spare time. My first hobby is basketball. I have been playing basketball since the opportunity sprung up in middle school. I instantly fell in love and it took the place of volleyball for my favorite sport. I love the game, the teamwork, the aggression, and the dedication to play basketball. My second passion is makeup. Although I haven't done it in awhile because of different priorities I still loved doing it. It would keep me busy for hours on end. Sometime I would sit there for 4 hours doing a makeup look! I didn’t think of makeup as trying to cover anything up or trying to hide. I more thought of it as any artist would think of. The face was an empty canvas I could paint with different colors, and styles. I really want to get into it again.
The Ideal Leader
The ideal leader is perceived in many ways. Many people think a leader is someone who pushes people to do a workload, and a person who gives orders and tells people where to go and what to do. For example, If a ‘leader’ oversees everything and disperses work among people but doesn't do any work themselves, that is not a leader. If someone does not want to put in any time or effort into something knowing they can get away with it, that is not a leader. A leader does not enforce stuff upon other people without enforcing it on themselves.
Many characteristics are required to be the ideal leader in our leadership program. Probably the most important of all is communication. You have to be able to communicate in order for everything that needs to be done, to be finished efficiently. You have to communicate all the time with your teammates, teachers, and administrator, all the time. Another thing that you would have to do is be involved in your work. You cannot just sit down while setting up rallies or events. You have to be proactive to get it finished in the recommended time and for it to look the best for the student body and staff. Without these leadership skills of every individual, the program would struggle to run.
Leadership kids fall under heavy stereotypes. We get called teachers pets, bossy, and picky. Whenever we do something, don’t know a specific date, or complain about something in class the common response is “Aren’t you a leadership kid?” Yes, we are leadership kids but we are also teenager that make mistakes, are stressed, etc. We are dual threats, Living up our youths with professionalism.

Caring
The Professional
In our leadership class I have learned many professional skills from this year. One of the skills that I thought was one of the most important was communication. Communication is needed in all workforces, no matter what it is. Communicating provides everyone with an even amount of knowledge about what is going on and what needs to be done. Also, speaking in a professional manner is really crucial when you are communicating with a community member, parent, or adult staff. You do not want to talk like you would to your friends. I feel as if this communication skill that I have obtained is really going to benefit me in the future. Another professional skill that I have learned is Public Speaking. We had multiple public speaking opportunities this year, whether it was a speech, Check-ins, or talking in front of our classes. The essentials of public speaking is to be clear, confident, and know what you are trying to get across to your audience. You cannot seem unsure, or lack confidence while public speaking because it will not be as effective to your audience. I am grateful for these skills that I have obtained to help me move forward to a professional career.
Change
As a freshman representative, everything we were coming into was new and we didn’t have any experience to help us out. All of the events were really trial and error or learn as you go. The first event we got thrown into was, of course, the biggest and most important. Homecoming was a STRUGGLE. We did not know that there were so many forms and paperwork to fill out. When you are a kid watching the parade were just thinking about the pretty floats, and never take in account how much time, people, shopping, planning, and budgeting it really takes. We did what we could, and we were really proud of ourselves. We did end up getting last though. After that experience we learned how competitive and intense homecoming really is, preparing for us in the future. Throughout the year, we got much better with class vs. class events. We almost won the Christmas tree competition for the Night Rally. I was really happy to have such a great team by my side. I didn’t really have any major internal struggles. The one struggle that was repetitive for me was frustration. I wanted everything to look good and to be first-place worthy. Whenever we lost another competition I felt as if we let down our class. I not only felt this way but the rest of the Freshman Representatives did too. It especially affected us when someone would make a comment about our hard work, and what we were proud of. It also pushed us to be better every time. If I had to say anything to the future Freshman Rep, I would say do no be afraid to ask for help. Getting as much information as you could is going to help so much throughout the year.
Dear Parents, |
I want to thank them for everything they do for me. I appreciate you guys always standing by my side with every decision I make. You guys do everything for me. From when I was little you made sure I had my priorities straight. Education would be a huge part of my life. It is very important to be a great student and to get good grades. I thought this was whatever when I was younger, but now that I am in Highschool I understand the importance of it. It is a big part of my focus. I also want to thank them for giving me whatever I needed. Whenever I needed money for a fieldtrip they would provide it. Whenever I needed dress up days for school, they would provide it. I am so grateful for how they always go out of their way to do stuff for me. Even though we have our ups and downs like regular parent-kid relationships, I wouldn’t change or switch them for the world. I couldn’t have asked for two better people raise me and to teach me lessons through life.

Dear Future Freshman Representatives,
Welcome to the Leadership Class! You are going to have such a great time, and great job for trying to get involved your first year in Highschool. You will have a great time and will learn to grow your leadership skills. It is going to be really tough and will take a lot of energy and time, but it will all be worth it in the end. First, I want to give you advice on your first event which should be homecoming. You need to find a person with a trailer ASAP. That is the most crucial part. When you find your location where you are going to work on it, get on it. Please do not procrastinate on buying your products and supplies. Also, there is no such thing as too much decorations, the other classes do not come to play. Make sure you get all the necessary paperwork filled out before needed. When Morty ask you questions in the debrief, you’ll be prepared! Which is always a good thing. Next I want to talk about Rallies. But more specifically, Night Rallies. The best thing to do is to hype up your class and encourage your class heavily to get spirited. Get them really excited and rowdy! It will not only make it fun for you and your class but it will earn you points! During the Homecoming night rally, there is a skit. Do NOT procrastinate at all on this dance. It takes at least two weeks to get down and perfect. This is a very competitive event, so be prepared. The last piece of advice I want to leave yourself is to take care of yourself! This is a demanding class to be in. There will be nights where you will stay up late working on events. Do not be afraid to ask for help. It's better to ask then to not know what you are doing. We made the mistake of expecting people to tell us, but in reality we should have asked more questions. Can’t wait to see what you accomplish!
